UNBLOCKING THE CAMPUS JOURNALIST DILEMMA
When words do not interlace perfectly to form the best-woven story and when ideas are running out, then yes, you might be having it – writer’s block.
Writer’s block, as mentioned in one of the articles at the University of Illinois Springfield, is the inability to begin or continue writing for reasons other than a lack of essential skill or commitment.
Even the best writers tend to come across this particular predicament, especially when others expect one to be someone who always has a compelling story to tell.
This reflects that being stuck in such a dilemma of not knowing what to write or how to write is an experience of every journalist at some point in their lives. Hence, as a campus journalist, you must not feel anxious and not be hard on yourself because you will soon be able to cope.
Since we should focus on coping rather than quitting, you must first understand what is happening.
Why are you stuck?
There are many reasons why one cannot compose a story. However, the first thing one should do is to find the blockers that might hinder the writing. These are but a few of the many reasons that you might consider.
Distraction. You may be doing other things than writing. There are lots of considered distractions, such as, but not limited to, being drawn to your gadget while scrolling on different social media and spending more time doing your hobbies. Even the noises around you are indeed blocking your ability to write.
Stress. When given a task, we often respond adversely, especially if it is too difficult to complete or heavy to carry. You are supposed to study and concentrate on your education as a learner. Naturally, this entails a great deal of responsibility for completing all the tasks given to you. We are aware that this causes you stress. Therefore, there may be added pressure to become a student journalist.
How are you supposed to get back on track and unblock these nuisances?
Focus. Find a place that feels solemn. Clear your mind from distractions such as your phone, laptop, or peers that create noise. Sometimes, it only takes a quiet and peaceful corner and a calm mind to get those creative ideas turning into writing!
Read. There's no better way to fill your mind with ideas than reading. Reading keeps you updated with information, and it will surely broaden your creativity and skills. Through reading, you can adapt techniques while filling your mind with stories.
Be up to date. Stay informed about current events and trends. Often, the best ideas come from what is happening around you.
Treat yourself. Take breaks, go for a walk, or indulge in comfort food. A refreshed mind is more creative and productive.
Take one step at a time. You cannot perfect writing in one sitting. Even the best writers have gone through intensive practice and continuous effort to better themselves. So you must not be hard on yourself and take one little step at a time. With consistency and perseverance, you will definitely be able to write a perfect piece.
Remember, it is not just you. We all experience such dilemmas. But always be optimistic. You can get back on track and write again. You are a journalist, after all—you can certainly do it!
